The History of G H Bass Monogram

The History of G H Bass Monogram

Realising that the footwear market was failing workers and outdoorsmen, George Henry Bass – a humble leather tannery employee founded G.H Bass in 1876 Wilton, Maine with a simple mission – “to create the best possible shoe for the purpose it is intended”. Bass created a line of boots and shoes in the most durable of leathers and outsoles built on the platform of values that the brand still upholds today.

The History of G H Bass Monogram

An accolade for timeless, high-quality footwear, a chance encounter between a USA based Esquire editor and the Norwegian farming loafer saw GH Bass relied upon again to produce timeless style. Playfully dubbed the “Weejun” in homage to its Norwegian conception, an agreement was struck with G.H Bass to produce loafers in style of the traditional Norwegian farming loafer in 1936 – A shoe that would carve the G.H Bass brand name into modern history. Michael Jackson, JFK, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn among the movers and shakers of the 20th century that adorned G.H Bass into their wardrobes and into their way of life.

The History of G H Bass Monogram

By 1939, G.H Bass had proven their excellence in footwear craftsmanship and created a monogram – more familiarly known as a logo [G.B.H] in honour of the finest footwear craftsmen and materials for there newly launched formal footwear collection. A collection of brogues, derby shoes, boots and loafers formed the premium line for G.H Bass and were constructed in the finest leathers, rubbers and suede.

The History of G H Bass Monogram

By the 1970’s the term “Monogram” was upholding the premium range of the brand doubling as a name for the collection. In 2015 the Monogram range received a new lease of life and made its debut in the European winter collection.

5 Unusual Vodkas You Need to Taste

5 Unusual Vodkas You Need to Taste

When you become fluent in Vodka like Adrian did in Rocky 4, you like to push the envelope and try something from left-field. Actually, you might not. You might have that one drink you’re famous for. You could be the nicest guy in the bar until you go top shelf, minutes later you’re launching pool cues like Arthur Daley, or was it Daley Thompson? Whatever that Decathletes name was with the handlebar moustache and the shorty-shorts. Anyway I digress. It’s always good to have a conversation stimulator in your liqueur cabinet, so why not invest in one of these.

5 Unusual Vodkas You Need to Taste

BLACK COW VODKA

Pure Milk Vodka is the invention of West Dorset dairy farmer Jason Barber. His inspiration came from a desire to diversify the produce from his 250 strong dairy herd and his deep personal interest in vodka. Now any man that has a deep personal interest in vodka is alright by me and as Melchett would say “welcome to marry my sister anytime.” This intriguingly titled spirit is a world first on the vodka scene as it is, unbelievably, distilled from milk. The ‘whey’ is transformed into a milk-bear, this is then distilled and triple filtered to create a singular vodka. The curds are then used to make the Black Cow Deluxe Cheddar. Incidentally the cheese is cowabunga (pun intended). The Black Cow was recently showcased at the Spirited Sermons cocktail master classes held at Reverand JW Simpson and is udderly delicious. What?

5 Unusual Vodkas You Need to Taste

LUST VODKA

This particular tipple has been rumoured to get ladies on their backs in less than five Bloody Marys. Regardless of the dubious science behind such a claim, you can’t deny the PR team behind Lust Vodka have nailed it, pardon the pun. Lust Vodka is distilled 6 times from grains containing gluten, which removed some or all of the gluten, and is blended with the purest water from natural aquifers deep beneath the lakes of central Florida, and bottled in the heart of the sunshine state. Sounds lovely doesn’t it ladies? Here – it’s my round, same again?

5 Unusual Vodkas You Need to Taste

SCORPION VODKA

Quick side note. I used to make Scorpion Vodka. Amongst many of the rubbish jobs on my CV was working in an alcohol factory in Witham, Essex. It was my job to insert dead Scorpions into bottles on a production line with a Polish guy that had a tear-drop tattoo. I would have a bucket full of these things, and the only thing I half-inched from that place was some dead scorpions to put under my housemates pillow. It’s totally safe to eat of course, although I was a vegetarian at the time, so never tried.

5 Unusual Vodkas You Need to Taste

Anestasia Vodka

This Vodka has been distilled and filtered 5 times over in Oregon to give a smooth gluten free taste made from all-natural grain and pure spring water from the Cascade Mountains. However, it’s the striking bottle design by New York designer Karim Rashid which first catches the eye. They even recommend scratching off the label when finished so the bottle can be utilized as a decanter or vase.

CRYSTAL HEAD VODKA

This Vodka is made by none other than Dan Aykroyd. (Incidentally one of my favourite names for a band is Dananananaykroyd, a six-piece, self-dubbed ‘Fight Pop’ band formed in 2006 in Glasgow. Never heard their music, but liked the name). Crystal Head Vodka is composed from the highest quality peaches and cream corn and is distilled four times into a neutral grain spirit and blended with pristine water from Newfoundland, Canada.

How Ryan Reynolds Shaped Up For Deadpool

How Ryan Reynolds Shaped Up For Deadpool

This month saw the opening of Deadpool, the latest superhero offering from the Marvel Universe. The character was first introduced to us on screen in 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ and it was Ryan Reynolds who played the role of Wade Wilson, the loveable antihero known as Deadpool. The humorous mercenary is a popular character both in the Marvel world and wider fan art community. Tributes, such as this Deadpool fact file graphic by Mobile Phones Direct, are quickly emerging over the internet due to the character’s solid following of fans. There is little doubt this ultimately helped get this latest spin-off film made and finally now in theatres after years of waiting.

How Ryan Reynolds Shaped Up For Deadpool

It’s been a few years since Reynolds played the character previously and now aged 39 it was time for him to once more beef himself up for the part. It can be a challenging aspect of an actor’s role especially once they get cast in a superhero movie that they must have the right look, body shape and physical prowess to handle everything thrown at them during the production.

How Ryan Reynolds Shaped Up For Deadpool

Through vigorous training and physical preparation, Reynolds managed to add seven pounds of lean muscle to his physique, but it was also a requirement for the actor to build up his strength for the demanding role and not just look buff for the camera. Plenty of weight training was thrown into his routine which required a specially formed weekly strength plan which would include sets and reps for his legs, shoulders, back, chest and arms.

How Ryan Reynolds Shaped Up For Deadpool

It was a challenging shoot and the endurance training for the Canadian star was crucial for a number of wildly ambitious scenes in the new movie. “Most of it is self-preservation.” said Reynolds. “You want to still be able to get up after take 50 of falling off some ledge and landing on cement”. The actor worked alongside trainer Don Saladino and focused on plenty of deadlifts and squats in order to score himself an enviable figure.

How Ryan Reynolds Shaped Up For Deadpool

His weekly schedule focused on all the key areas including shoulders, which would require Reynolds to perform 4 sets of 10 reps each for a dumbbell press, side raise, rear and front delt raises with about a minutes rest in between each. For his chest exercises he would perform a bench press (7 sets of 4 reps), incline press (4 sets of 6 reps), dumbbell flies (4 sets of 10 reps) and finally dumbbell pullovers (4 sets of 15 reps). Each specific area would be concentrated each day resting on the 3rd and 7th and it was this workout coupled with the right attitude, determination and a muscle activating warm-up that helped Reynolds achieve his movie-ready physique for his comeback on screen as quick-witted antihero Deadpool.
