There’s a minor scandal in the world of tech today as GIPHY-integration has been temporarily removed from both Instagram and Snapchat. The reason behind the freeze stems in an extremely racist GIF appearing in the app’s search for ‘crime’ that utilizes not only insensitive imagery but the n-word.
Both companies gave statements to TechCrunch regarding the dismissal. Snapchat stated that “As soon as we were made aware, we removed the GIF and have disabled GIPHY until we can be sure that this won’t happen again,” while Instagram said that “This type of content has no place on Instagram. We have stopped our integration with GIPHY as they investigate the issue.” There has been no comment yet from GIPHY about the situation.
It is also not clear for how long GIPHY will be absent from both platforms, so be sure to stay tuned as more updates roll in.
