Bob Marley’s Redemption Song Gets Official Music Video to Celebrate its 40th Anniversary

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the famous song by Bob Marley, his estate and record label have released an official music video created by French artists Octave Marsal & Theo De Gueltzl.

Marsal & De Gueltzl’s breathtaking animation, featuring 2,747 original drawings, uses powerful symbols to amplify the magnitude of the song’s timeless lyrics and importance in today’s world.

Released in October 1980, “Redemption Song” was featured on Marley’s final album, Uprising. He died the following year from cancer. The music video is the first instalment of “Marley75,” a year-long celebration of the late reggae legend’s birthday, who would have turned 75 years old on February 6th.

Deconstructing the World’s Most Famous Cello Song Will Make You Love Bach

Bach’s G major prelude has captivated cellists and music lovers for years. In this episode of Earworm, cellist Alisa Weilerstein deconstructs it.

Bach’s six cello suites are considered a rite of passage for cellists. They’re masterpieces of classical music, and the prelude in G major — the first movement of the suites — is perhaps the best example of Bach’s power as a composer. In it, he’s able to achieve rich and complex harmonic movements, while using the very basic tenets of music composition.

Those basic tenets are what Alisa Weilerstein, a renowned cellist and McArthur fellow, helps us understand.

Why Hitting is Hard: Overlaying a 94 mph Fastball and an 80 mph Curveball

Rob Friedman, a pitching analyst for MLB and ESPN, demonstrates how hard it is to hit a major league pitch with this elegant visual.

Using ace Charlie Morton’s 94 mph fastball and 80 mph curveball, we can appreciate how hard it must be for a hitter to swing or lay off. Both pitches look the same coming out of Morton’s hand and then things get very different.

If the video above isn’t playing for you, check out the original tweet embedded below.

The concept behind the identity and range of packaging is a nod to the idea that the best company you can keep is being with yourself. This is reflected in the repetition of the Buddy Buddy character … not a set of twins but a man and his reflection.

For the brand’s identity, we chose an eye-catching and friendly color palette with the use of neutral tones contrasting with pops of color, which are used throughout the graphic system to differentiate the different types of products. This was complemented with ocher tones and golden finishes to give a premium essence.

Born in 2008 as an Independent Design Studio, Futura is a boutique-like workshop that seeks to redefine the Mexican design values, maintaining functionality, wit, and charisma. They specialize in resource optimization paying attention to every detail. Nowadays their HQ is based in Mexico, but they have clients all over the world.

Guy Hacks Google Maps With 99 Phones and a Little Red Wagon

google maps hacks by simon weckert 5 Guy Hacks Google Maps With 99 Phones and a Little Red Wagon

Artist Simon Weckert transported 99 smartphones in a little red wagon to generate a virtual traffic jam in Google Maps. He was able to turn a virtual ‘green’ street ‘red’, which impacted the physical world by navigating cars using Google Maps on another route to avoid being ‘stuck’ in traffic.

Check out the video below and scroll down to learn more about this project.

The advent of Google’s Geo Tools began in 2005 with Maps and Earth, followed by Street View in 2007. They have since become enormously more technologically advanced. Google’s virtual maps have little in common with classical analogue maps. The most significant difference is that Google’s maps are interactive – scrollable, searchable and zoomable. Google’s map service has fundamentally changed our understanding of what a map is, how we interact with maps, their technological limitations, and how they look aesthetically.

In this fashion, Google Maps makes virtual changes to the real city. Applications such as Airbnb and Carsharing have an immense impact on cities: on their housing market and mobility culture, for instance. There is also a major impact on how we find a romantic partner, thanks to dating platforms such as Tinder, and on our self-quantifying behaviour, thanks to the Nike jogging app. Or map-based food delivery-app like Deliveroo or Foodora. All of these apps function via interfaces with Google Maps and create new forms of digital capitalism and commodification. Without these maps, car sharing systems, new taxi apps, bike rental systems and online transport agency services such as Uber would be unthinkable. An additional mapping market is provided by self-driving cars; again, Google has already established a position for itself.

With its Geo Tools, Google has created a platform that allows users and businesses to interact with maps in a novel way. This means that questions relating to power in the discourse of cartography have to be reformulated. But what is the relationship between the art of enabling and techniques of supervision, control and regulation in Google’s maps? Do these maps function as dispositive nets that determine the behaviour, opinions and images of living beings, exercising power and controlling knowledge? Maps, which themselves are the product of a combination of states of knowledge and states of power, have an inscribed power dispositive. Google’s simulation-based map and world models determine the actuality and perception of physical spaces and the development of action models.

Simon Weckert is an artist with his home base in Berlin. He likes to share knowledge on a wide range of fields from generative design to physical computing. His focus is the digital world – including everything related to code and electronics under the reflection on current social aspects, ranging from technology oriented examinations to the discussion of current social issues.
In his work, he seeks to assess the value of technology, not in terms of actual utility, but from the perspective of future generations. He wants to raise awareness of the privileged state in which people live within Western civilization and remind them of the obligations attached to this privilege.

Hidden layers like producing and transporting the raw minerals required to create the core infrastructure of technologie and “human fulled automation” labor of microworkers who perform the repetitive digital tasks that underlie new technologie are just some of the topics in his projects. This Awesome Dragon Made From Palm Tree Leaves (5 Photos)

Artwork by Ayako

Japanese artist Ayako recently created an incredible dragon sculpture made from palm tree leaves, branches, and wood for the The Shimadakara (“Island Treasure”) Art Festival in Urama, Okinawa.

The artwork, entitled “Ryu Miyagi”, was introduced with the accompanying blurb:

The island, where still the original scenery remains.
So much nature,
thank you for protecting our treasure.
The island with the dragon
When it gets quiet, you can hear it
The voice of wind
The voice of the island
The voice of your heart
Lend an ear to the various voices
To the moment that is here right now.
What can be seen
What can’t be seen
I wonder what can be seen.

Located on a hill above the village, the dragon’s body sways and shakes with the wind.

Juvenile Striped Eel Catfish Moving as One for Protection While Feeding

In this clip taken in Jemeluk Bay, Bali, by the Abyss Diving Center, we see a school of juvenile striped eel catfish demonstrating a fascinating defensive behaviour.

As striped eel catfish at the bottom forage and eat, the ones up top keep a lookout for predators and other dangers. The Diving Center explains:

“These little guys tend to form a school as juveniles, up to a hundred individuals, to protect themselves from predators, and go about their lives on their own when they reach their sexual maturity. Fun fact, if the adults are venomous and can inflict a painful sting, the young ones can only produce a mild version of the venom, tingling the fingers of the people putting their hands in the school (which we don’t recommend you do!).” [source]
