If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you’ll know about the awesome news that is The MITT Mrkt. Pop-Up opening last week in Sydney. Our goal with The MITT Mrkt. is to showcase the amazing makers Australia has to offer and making their goods available to purchase in store and online (gradually).
Over the next few weeks we’ll be profiling these talented individuals in The MITT Podcast, starting off with a duo who guarantee they can make you the best tee you’ll ever wear. I visited Zoltan and Eric of Citizen Wolf in their Surry Hills studio to witness the magic behind the brand.
NATHAN SASI IN SYDNEY
Nothing is more attractive than you being you. That’s why male grooming brand LYNX has partnered with fashion designer Felix Chan (formerly Vanishing Elephant) to create the Find Your Magic collection. The limited edition men’s accessories are inspired by its new Daily Fragrance range and three individuals who stand out for doing things differently. I’m excited to introduce these creatives with LYNX in a new series of profiles where we’ll get to chat with chef Nathan Sasi, tattoo artist Giorgia Mae and hairdresser Jules Tognini about their Find Your Magic Collection and find out what their magic is. Second to the plate…
Nathan Sasi is a Sydney chef with most recent fame from the opening of the Good Times Artisan Ice Cream store in Potts Point and Sydney restaurant Mercado. Having been the culinary genius behind the Nomad kitchen as executive chef, Sasi shot to fame and has continued to make his mark on the food and lifestyle Sydney scene. An entrepreneur making waves across Sydney, Sasi’s individual look, his confidence to stand up and stand out and his signature style has that little bit of magic that we wanted to share.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAY TO DAY LOOK LIKE?
My average day is very, very long. It starts at 5am because we only opened our restaurant three weeks ago. I come in in the morning and I’m the baker as well as the restaurant owner, so I mill all my own grains and make the bread until about 9am. After that we just get stuck into all the preparation of opening up the restaurant. I have 17 other people who help me so it’s not all on my own. I usually end the day at 1am, after cleaning up and doing some ordering for the next day… it’s a whirlwind from start to finish.
HOW DID YOUR CAREER IN FOOD GET STARTED?
I actually did it to impress a woman. So there was this girl that I really liked and she just started a job as a waitress. She kept talking about how cute the chefs were and how talented they were, so I was like, if I’m going to try and get this girl, I’m going to become a chef.
So my first job was working for Neil Perry at his restaurant Rockpool. It was a three-hatted restaurant, regarded as one of the best in Australia and in the world and I did my whole apprenticeship there.
DID YOU GET THE GIRL?
I sure did, she’s my wife.
WHY DO YOU THINK LYNX APPROACHED YOU TO CREATE YOUR OWN ‘FIND YOUR MAGIC’ COLLECTION?
I think that food, fashion and grooming are of the same silk. They have become these artisan products that represent an individual’s tastes. I think LYNX saw something different and unique in what I’m doing with food in Sydney and wanted to create a collection that represented what I stand for. In the kitchen, I like to be really hands on. I like to make everything from scratch including cheese making, bread making and curing our own meats. I wanted to represent that in the collection while working with Felix, and really giving it my all.
WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR MAGIC?
Maybe it’s my respect for old-school traditions. I love getting to know where people have come from, delving into their pasts and learning from them. Whether it’s in fashion, food or just life in general, there is something to say in how people choose to live.
Nathan wears the silk pocket square, patterned tie and cross socks from his Find Your Magic Collection, available exclusively at The MITT Mrkt. All proceeds from the Find Your Magic Collection will be made to LYNX’s charity partner, I-Manifest.
STEVE BARKLA IN SYDNEY
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Victoria native Steve Barkla in Sydney a few weeks ago at the new Oscar Hunt Tailors post in the CBD. We of course discussed all things fashion and tailoring amongst finding your place in world.
